MediaTek's Pump Express Plus to Take on QuickCharge

It’s not a secret that as smartphones become more powerful, the more battery life diminishes in return. With bigger screens, faster processors, more multitasking capabilities, it’s easy to bring a full charge down into the abyss. Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 1.0 was introduced by Qualcomm to give a boost in reducing the charging times taken by a device to get its juice filled up again and fill the gap that was left by this problem. Qualcomm QuickCharge 1.0 was announced back in 2013 and later the technology was improved and the Chipset Giant introduced Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 2.0.

QuickCharge 1.0 was able to charge smartphones up to 40 percent faster than older device models. Quick Charge 1.0 was embedded in devices with Snapdragon processors, including HTC’s Droid DNA, Samsung’s Galaxy S III, Nokia’s Lumia 920, ASUS’ Padfone and the Nexus 4 at that time. Qualcomm was committed to boosting the charging process and charge the batteries to their full in much lesser time. With the introduction of QuickCharge 2.0, Qualcomm claimed to fasten the charging process by 75%. Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 2.0 featured in Samsung Note 4, Droid Turbo, and LG G4. It was included in all devices powered by Snapdragon 8XX series processors.

Qualcomm’s rival MediaTek lacked a competing feature in this area and even the recently announced Helio X20 did not feature any fast charging. MediaTek also enjoys a large share in the System-on-Chips domain and so smartphone vendors using MediaTek SoCs suffered due to the unavailability of rapid charging. Luckily, MediaTek is committed to giving Qualcomm a tough competition and is playing an active role by innovating the SoC domain. Recently we saw the first Deca Core CPU by MediaTek which was a breakthrough in the SoC development. And now, MediaTek has introduced their own fast charging technology named Pump Express Plus. According to the MediaTek, Pump Express Plus will charge devices from 0 to 75% in just 30 minutes, which is 15% faster than Qualcomm’s claim of charging the battery from 0 to 60% in 30 minutes.

MediaTek’s rapid charging technology will be incorporated in the latest MediaTek’s SoCs including the high-performance MT6595 and the affordable MT6732. Helio X20 may also enjoy this perk, but there isn’t any official statement from MediaTek yet. MediaTek Pump Express Plus would require a special wall charger which will come with two turbo modes. The Turbo 1 would give 7 Volts and 1.67 Amperes current resulting in 11.7 Watts power [ Power = Voltage x Current]. The Turbo 2 would give 9 Volts and 1.67 Ampers current yielding a power of 15 Watts.
