Motorola has certainly been in the news today – earlier today we were treated to a new leak that suggests that Moto is testing out two new smartphones. The word on the street is that they will land on the Verizon network, which begs the question…are these the new DROID models? If so, these would follow the popular DROID Turbo, which surprised everybody with its 5.2-inch QHD display and resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and a whopping 565 pixels-per-inch (PPI)…a true flagship device. It had a huge 3900mAh battery, a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage.
The new models are supposed to have two of Qualcomm’s newest processors – one with the Snapdragon 808 hexa-core and the other will sport a Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor. The other information leaked is that both devices will have a QHD or 2K display, like the current DROID Turbo. With no official names assigned, we are looking at XT1578 or XT1097 – code named Clark, and the XT1585 – codenamed Kinzie. The Clark model is said to have a PPI of 560…very close to the current DROID Turbo. The Kinzie is said to have 640 PPI which is higher and could mean a smaller display.
Nothing official, of course, but according to an anonymous insider, sources from a supply chain, the Kinzie should arrive with a 5.43-inch QHD YOUM display. It would be the first smartphone to use the full-version of the plastic/glasstic lens and marketed as the first “unbreakable” display. Motorola likes to try different features, such as they were the first manufacturer to use Kevlar in their cases. The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge was the first device to utilize the YOUM or flexible display, followed by the new Galaxy S6 Edge. If the Motorola is truly a flexible or “unbreakable” design, could be a more advanced form of the YOUM design, of course, Samsung already has a foldable smartphone being tested, so anything is possible.
These are only leaks by anonymous insiders and rumors, and must be taken with a grain of salt. The idea of more DROID devices is certainly a possibility as there have been multiple devices in the past. For the past year there has only been the DROID Turbo, so two new models or one replacing the Turbo is possible. With Lenovo’s takeover of Motorola, we were wondering if they would continue making the DROID model for Verizon…it looks like the DROID line will continue and it will be interesting to hear more about these new models.
