Featured: Top 10 Best Network Speed Test Apps

Probably one of the more geeky things to do, is to test the speed of your connection. But it’s still fun to do and see how well your internet service provider or mobile carrier is doing. I typically will run a speed test when I’m in a new area to see how the networks perform in different places. Below are about 10 network speed test apps that we’ve found on the Play Store that will show you how fast or slow your connection really is.

Internet Speed Meter Lite

This app shows your current speed in the status bar. So you can always look up and see how fast your speeds are on your device. It also breaks down your usage on WiFi and mobile per day. Which is a neat stat to take a look at.

Sensorly

This is one of my favorite services. It uses real data from users to show you how networks and carriers perform in areas. So instead of relying on carrier maps to see if you have coverage, you can use Sensorly’s app. Which also has a speed test built in, that’s how they get their data.

WiFi Analyzer

Not so much a speed test app, but I included this because it’s helpful for people to learn the best place to put their router in their home. This app shows the signal strength of your network where you are. So if you far away from your router you can see just how bad the signal is. It’s very helpful.

Speedtest.net

This is the app that everyone knows about. It’s been around forever, and is made by Ookla. It’s a simple speedtest app, it also works on the web if you go to speedtest.net, and it powers most ISP’s speedtest that are hosted on their sites.

FCC Speed Test

If you need to know more than just the upload and download speeds for your network, than the FCC Speed Test app is a good one to check out. It also gives you latency, packet loss and a ton of other metrics.

Internet Speed Test

Internet Speed Test allows you to check the ping, download speed and upload speed of your current connection. You are also able to go ahead and see speed tests in other areas and see where your network is the strongest.

OpenSignal Maps

OpenSignal is a lot like Sensorly. Its app is a great tool for finding out which carrier has the best network coverage and speed in your area, and in areas you travel too often. They get their data from their app, which is free and on the Play Store. You can also see local cell towers, which most other apps don’t allow.

Internet Speed Meter

This material design app, will test your internet speed for you. It also shows your current speeds in the status bar, as well as showing you how much data you’ve used over time. Definitely a few important features there for those looking to find the best coverage from the mobile carriers.
