As usual, there are several leaks before an official smartphone launch from Samsung, this time it’s the turn for a lower-end model, the Galaxy J5. By this time, we should be used to the new naming scheme that Samsung has been employing in their recent portfolio, the Galaxy name indicates that it uses the Android OS, then there’s a letter that indicates how powerful the device is, as well as the materials used in its construction and the number following the letter indicates how good the internal specs are and the size of its screen within the same series. The Galaxy J1 has been available for a while, but not too much time after had gone when Samsung registered the names for additional members of this entry-level family of smartphones the Galaxy J3, Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7. Registering names doesn’t mean that the company will actually use them in future devices, but they have the option if they feel like they need them.
The names of the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7 have also appeared in Chinese certification documents, so these two are definitely in development. Since then, more information has been flowing regarding these two devices, about two weeks ago, the manuals for these devices leaked, so a little more information about the UI was known, they will actually use the most recent version of Touchwiz, the one that is found in the Galaxy S6, which runs on top of Android 5.1 nonetheless, one of the most recent updates of the OS.
Now, the Galaxy J5 (with model number J500F) can be seen in real life photos for the first time. Its design resembles the one found on the Galaxy J1 with a plastic build including a removable back and a user-replaceable battery along with it as well as a Micro SD card slot for expandable storage. The rumored specs include a 5-inch screen, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor with 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory and a 2,600 mAh battery. All this specs are similar to the ones found on the Galaxy E5, except it has less internal memory but while this device carries an 8-megapixel camera on the back, the one on the Galaxy J5 is rumored to be a 13-megapixel one. The front facing camera will probably be 5 megapixels, as in most of the recent models, but the small circle on the left side of the device looks interestingly like an LED flash, the proximity sensor and the light sensor are right next to the camera and even though its placement is a little unusual, Samsung has been focusing on bringing better quality to the cameras on the front including the ones in lower end models, so this possibility is not completely unexpected.
