Google I/O is a bit of a distant memory now. However, the big news of all the major updates and new feature and services which are now en route are not so much of a memory. Android M is still fresh in the news and pretty much on a daily basis, as is Google’s new photo taking/storing/sharing service, Google Photos. Well, it is Wednesday and that does mean that it is a return to normal business now with a number of more minor updates will begin rolling out to the already established Google features and services. The first which one is already coming down the wire is a newly announced update to Gmail.
The update, which was announced today on a Gmail Google+ post (source link below), details that the new update is more primarily intended for those who make use of third party email accounts like those from Microsoft or Yahoo. For those users, Google have announced that the new update to Gmail for Android sees support for Oauth for both Microsoft and Yahoo accounts. For those unfamiliar with Oauth, this is used to bring additional levels of security to your email client. In particular, Oauth will be of much use going forward, to those who want to add heightened security measures like the ability to implement two-step verification methods or the ability to use account recovery. The latest update will see both of these features, as well as others, now capable of being used through Gmail with Microsoft and Yahoo accounts.
As always with these types of updates, there is no set delivery time for when the update will land for your device or app. As such, you will just need to keep an eye out for the app updating or for the updated version to go live on the Play Store. Google does state that the update will be rolling out over the next few days and will also bring with it some more minor bug fixes and performance improvements, as well as the already noted Oauth support.
