Motorola-made Nexus 6 is the last Nexus handset released by Google, but the Nexus 5 was the last smartphone released by the company. What do we mean by that? Well, the Nexus 6 is a huge 6-inch device, which basically means we’re looking at a phablet here, not a smartphone. This actually makes the Nexus 5 the latest smartphone that Google has released, but it’s no longer available for purchase from Google considering it has been discontinued. That being said, Google will release new Nexus device this year, but will either of them sport a display smaller than 6-inches? Well, according to a number of rumors, yes, it will.
According to a number of rumors which surfaced in the last couple of weeks, Google is actually working with both LG and Huawei on new Nexus devices. The 5.2-inch device will allegedly be manufactured by LG, while Huawei will be in charge of producing the 5.7-inch phablet. The formed is reportedly codenamed Bullhead, while the latter carries the Angler naming at the moment. Keep in mind that these are just rumors, and Google hasn’t confirmed any of this, but the company might have leaked the new Nexus smartphone in one of company’s Google I/O-related Developer videos.
The aforementioned video actually explains Android Pay payments, and talks about the native fingerprint scanning support of the new Android M operating system. If you take a look at the embedded video down below (rewind to 2:56), you’ll see what seems to be a red Nexus 5 sporting a fingerprint scanner on the back. Now, keep in mind that this is probably just a prototype device which is used only on Google Campus, and probably won’t be up for sale. The fingerprint scanner is located on the back side of this device, next to the camera sensor. The positioning seems really odd, and Google will hardly release something like this.
There you have it folks, this is quite probably not the upcoming Nexus 5, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Check out the video if you’re interested, and there are also a couple of screenshots of the device available in the gallery down below, in case you don’t want to browse through the video.
