Google loves getting its hands in all sorts of different markets in the technology industry and otherwise, and their latest project shows just how far-reaching the California-based search giant has become. Project Fi is the work of a partnership between Google, T-Mobile and Sprint to create what’s essentially the ultimate network of WiFi hotspots and wireless networks, giving users the freedom to roam around the country and enjoy the best signal and speeds possible without having to worry about where or what they’re connecting to. The only caveat at this point is that you need to be an owner of a Google Nexus 6 to take advantage of this program, a hindrance that’s likely at the forefront of many users minds.
The Nexus 6 isn’t exactly the cheapest handset on the market right now, despite the Nexus name’s traditional cheap price point, so Google is going to throw in a little goody bag to ensure that newer owners of the special Project Fi Nexus 6 don’t feel left out in the cold when dropping over $600 for their new phone. Those who have ordered the Project Fi welcome kit are receiving some pretty awesome Nexus 6 goodies in the form of a white silicone case for the handset, a pair of earbuds and an external battery that’ll work for pretty much anything out there that charges via a microUSB port.
These small gifts given by Google seem to be an olive branch of sorts for new customers, bringing them into the fold with a few useful items and of course packaging them with some great Google humor. We’ve learned from countless April Fools’ jokes that Google is a company that loves to be funny and relate to their audience, and it’s these sorts of little treats that have really gotten people to love Google over the years. Google is a company of geeks for geeks without a doubt and it’s pretty obvious here that they’re just trying to show us some love. Nexus 6 owners will also likely be happy that they’re already able to flash the brand new Android M Preview onto their handsets, another great little gift from Google that keeps on giving.
