Meizu has pre-announced the announcement of a new device, coming only days away on the 30 June. We’ve also seen a number of teasers and the most prominent of these includes the words, “full metal jacket,” which implies that the new device has a metal shell. As for the exact device in question, at this juncture we cannot be sure but it is believed to be the Meizu MX5. Images leaked today seem to agree with this assessment; the new device should have a premium look and feel thanks to the metal chassis, and we would hope that the Meizu will also be sturdily built, although as Apple (allegedly) discovered, building a device out of metal does not necessarily mean it is especially strong.
There is another clue in the leaked photographs, which is that there is a large oval cutout, presumably for a home button. The reason why the device may have such a large cut out is probably because the new Meizu will have a fingerprint scanner. Increasingly, manufacturers around the world are building their devices with a fingerprint scanner incorporated into the home key (with another nod towards both Apple and Samsung). The leaks also come with a few rumors surrounding the specification of the as yet unannounced new Meizu device, which state that the MX5 will be based around a 5.5-inch, 1080p display and it’ll be powered by a MediaTek 6795T processor, also known as the Helio X10, which features eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 2.3 GHz, backed up by 3 GB of RAM. The device will support a MicroSD card of up to 128 GB capacity, use a 20MP rear camera and contain an embedded 3,150 mAh battery. Other specifications were not rumored at this time, such as internal storage.
This looks to be a respectable specification and if the rumored price is to be believed – 1,799 Yuan, somewhere a little shy of $300 – then the next Meizu device also looks to offer good value. However, there is no guarantee that the leaked images are for the new Meizu or if it is, are for the MX5. We have a little over a week until we have a better idea of the new Meizu device and we will keep you in the loop.
