The march for Android 5.x (Lollipop) updates continues. However for most of the flagship devices, the march has turned to one beyond the initial Android 5.0 update and on to the more micro and incremental updates. The latest on this front comes for owners of the Moto X devices, both first and second generations. A post sent out today by David Schuster on his Google+ account confirms that the two Moto X devices have begun soak testing their Android 5.1 update. Which is in line with the information that Schuster revealed last week, suggesting that the update would begin sometime about now, at least for the 2013 Moto X. That said, the soak testing is only relevant to certain markets.
In terms of the first generation Moto X, Schuster confirms soak testing is beginning today for European owners in Belgium, Italy, Netherlands and Spain. While further afield, soak testing has also commenced in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. In terms of the second generation Moto X, Schuster also confirmed that soak testing has begun in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Singapore and Sweden. As such, some regions like Singapore, Belgium and Hong Kong are seeing some cross-over with both versions of the Moto X being tested while in others, it is one or the other. Unfortunately, for other countries, like the U.S., they are not listed to be receiving the update for either device. Of course, Brazil already saw the 2013 Moto X receiving its soak test last month, so this is essentially a continuation of that soaking.
In terms of the actual rollout of Android 5.1 to the Moto X’s, Schuster conclude his post by detailing that if the soak testing goes well and problem free, then the official deployment should commence sometime next week. Although, it is still likely that next week will only see the rolling out of the updates to carriers for their final testing before it reaches end-user devices. Either way though, this will be good news for the many Moto X owners out there, as Motorola have been promising their updates will come thick and fast and most would assume the Moto Xs to be at the forefront of those updates.
