Motorola Mobility’s David Schuster has announced on his Google Plus account earlier on Tuesday that the first generation Moto X is just days away from getting the Android 5.1 Lollipop update. He also said, there was “an issue” found in a previous soak test, which has meant a slight delay in rolling out the current update. However, the update about to be rolled out next week is only meant for the unlocked version of the phone, meaning those using carrier-locked devices will either need to get their phones unlocked by their carriers (once the contractual obligations are over) to get the update directly from Motorola, or wait a little while longer in order for the carriers to start rolling out the update. Schuster said the update is currently “in a number of carrier labs”, and he doesn’t “anticipate issues in getting the updates deployed”. As for the unlocked version, Mr. Schuster expressed hope that full soak testing in the US and Brazil can commence later this week, and if everything goes according to plan without any further hiccups, “full deployment can happen the following week”.
The first generation Moto X was introduced by Motorola when the company was still a subsidiary of Google, and as such, was the first device designed and manufactured with direct inputs from the authors of Android. The device features a 4.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a 720p HD resolution. The device originally came with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, but has since been updated to Android 4.4 KitKat by Motorola. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s MSM8960DT Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC, which comes with a dual-core 1.7 GHz Krait 300 CPU and an Adreno 320 GPU. The device has 2 GB RAM, and originally came in three storage options of 16, 32 and 64 GB. The primary 10 megapixel camera on the rear of the device comes with autofocus and an LED flash, whereas the front selfie-cam has a 2 megapixel sensor. Both the cameras have the ability to record Full HD 1080p videos at 30 frames per second. The device sports a non-removable 2200 mAh li-ion battery, and come with a number of sensors including the accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity, compass, barometer, and temperature.
