Nest hasn’t had any new products launched since they were purchased by Google last year, but new details suggest they may be preparing to launch a successor to Dropcam in the near future. A document filed with the FCC for a product listed as a wireless camera (which is what Dropcam happens to be) under Nest Labs Inc. may point to an upcoming launch of a new security camera device. There’s also the nature of Nest’s upcoming press conference which happens on June 17th, for which there are still no details on what will be discussed. It wouldn’t be a shock though to see Nest unveil a new wireless camera device to replace Dropcam considering the FCC document.
According to the filing, the wireless camera device without an official name to call its own harbors similar technology to that found within the Dropcam Pro unit, as well as also supports similar connections such as Bluetooth 4.0 LE. These particular details are not telling enough to peg this device as a Dropcam replacement with one hundred percent certainty, but they are enough to get some thoughts brewing and if anything it at least raises questions on what Nest has planned coming up in the future as well as for their press conference next week.
As pointed out by 9 to 5 Google, the FCC filing also showed a small diagram of what the FCC label would like on the device, and it display the FCC stamp on a round shaped surface with a tag that states the FCC stamp would be present on the bottom of the device. This indicates that the device in question could in fact be a replacement for Dropcam as both the Dropcam and Dropcam Pro had round flat surfaces for the base, which were used to stick or fasten the cameras to the walls of people homes or businesses. There is still the better part of a week before Nest holds their special press event, so more details may or may not surface in regards to any new products before then.
