The Galaxy J series from Samsung became official with the introduction of the Galaxy J1 at the beginning of the year. According to the naming scheme that Samsung recently adopted, this series will include lower-end handsets although the recently announced Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 could be considered solid mid-range offerings as they include Snapdragon 410 and Snapdragon 615 processors respectively and even some unique features like the LED flash located in the front, being a first for the company.
The assumption that this family would be dedicated to entry-level devices, comes from the specifications of the Galaxy J1, which include a smallish 4.3-inch screen with the low-resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, a Spreadtrum dual-core processor and 512 MB of RAM. The internal storage is 4 GB although it can be expanded via a microSD card. The main camera has a 5-megapixel sensor and the one in the front has a resolution of 2-megapixels. The design is pretty much what could be expected from the company and it’s made of plastic.
Now, a report suggests that a new handset could be added to this series and it doesn’t seem to be the rumored successor of the Galaxy J1. The new handset is the SM-J200F which first appeared on the IMEI database and according to this model number, the phone could end up being known as the Galaxy J2. Further evidence of the existence of the phone comes from the Indian import and export database Zauba, where the device was spotted and even mentions that the size of the screen will be 4.7 inches. Most of the time, companies send devices to other countries so they can be tested and Zauba has become a reliable source when it comes to the first details of new devices. Since the J2 name of the device is close to the Galaxy J1, we might expect specs that belong to a low-end device only with a larger screen. As the availability of the Galaxy J1 isn’t very wide, this might be the case for the new device. However, until Samsung make any official announcement on the device, speculation is likely to continue.
