Huawei is definitely stepping up the smartwatch game with its first wearable device. The Chinese manufacturer’s designs have really stood up as can be seen in their recent launches with smartphones like the ones in the P8 lineup, they are built with premium materials and the hardware features a minimalistic style while integrating very good internals.
Back to the Huawei Watch, the company impressed everyone in the official announcement that took place on this year’s MWC, its industrial design is aiming for a timeless look by using the elements of classic watches and integrating the new technology and functionality that Android Wear has to offer. The casing surrounding the completely round display features a very reduced bezel and is made of polished stainless steel, it’s relatively slim at 11.3 mm. The 1.4-inch AMOLED screen is very dense featuring 286 ppi and it is covered with sapphire. Its processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 at 1.2 GHz and the amount of RAM is 512 MB. Aside from getting notifications on the watch, using the integrated sensors it can monitor some physical activities to improve the user’s health. The watchbands can be replaceable, but users can choose from stainless steel or leather options out of the box.
The Huawei Watch has been available for pre-ordering for a while now in some European countries and the US and Canada but Chinese users will have to wait a little longer as the company has stated that the launch date in this country has been delayed. Since not all of Google’s services are available in China, Huawei will have to customize the operating system to include some services of their own that are actually optimized for this market, but the version of Android meant for wearables is not as open as the one used in smartphones, the company seems to be having some trouble modifying it. There’s no specific date for the launch of this device, but He Gang, head of the mobile division of the company, said that it won’t happen before September. It might be a little late, as more companies will have been developing smartwatches by that time, but it will probably still be one of the better looking.
