It’s been an excellent couple of years for Star Wars fans. In 2012, Disney bought the rights to everything Star Wars for a cool $4 billion and quickly promised the franchise’s fans that more movies and T.V. shows were on the horizon. Disney CEO Robert Iger said “This is one of the great entertainment properties of all time, one of the best branded, and one of the most valuable, and it’s just fantastic for us to have the opportunity to both buy it, run it and grow it.” He went on to add “our long-term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.” Fast forward to today and big time Hollywood director J.J. Abrams is directing The Force Awakens with a release date set for later this year on Dec 18, 2015. In anticipation for this blockbuster film Disney is pulling out all the stop and today released the ultimate Star Wars fan app for free in the Google Play store.
When you first open the app you are presented with three choices; Light side, Dark side or Droids. Your opening page will change depending on which path you choose. From there you can pick your own Avatar from a host of Star Wars characters from both film and T.V. Also on this opening page you have options for official news feed, official videos, soundboard, Force trainer, selfie camera and augmented reality. The augmented reality gives you 3D characters from the new movie The Force Awakens when you find special marked Star Wars posters and scan them from within the app.
This Star Wars app has everything a huge fan or casual Star Wars fan would need. It’s a companion app that keeps you up to date with all things going on in the Star Wars universe. It gives you updates on not just movies and T.V shows, but also video games, press release and more. The soundboard has classic sounds from not just the most recent Trilogy episodes 1, 2 and 3 but also from the classic Trilogy episodes 4, 5 and 6. There also is a selfie mood that takes Stars Wars skins and overlays them onto your personal pictures for that personal Star Wars touch. This app is clearly aimed at die-hard Star Wars fans and those who are already hyped for The Force Awakens this fall. But because this app is chalked full of so many different features, games and videos the casual fan will find it enjoyable as well.
