In an effort to regain lost market share in the entry and mid-range segments in important emerging markets like China and India, Samsung has been working on its Galaxy A, E and J series smartphones for some time now. The South Korean manufacturer already sells the Galaxy J1 smartphone in India, and speculation is rife that the company will launch the Galaxy J2 sometime later in the quarter, after having already announced the Galaxy J5 and J7 smartphones last month in China. Now, according to latest reports doing the rounds, the hardware specifications of the company’s entry-level Galaxy J2 smartphone has been leaked on SamMobile. The specifications, however, do differ a bit from the ones leaked earlier from the phone’s listing on Geekbench.
The smartphone will reportedly feature a 4.5-inch TFT LCD display, which will come with a WVGA (800 x 480) resolution. The smartphone will be powered by an Exynos 3475 chipset, designed in-house by Samsung. The chip with come with a quad-core 32-bit CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz. The device is also said to come with 1.5 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card. The smartphone will have a 5 megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 2 megapixel selfie-cam on the front. The device will run on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box, and will come with a 2,000 mAh battery. The device measures 136 mm x 69 mm in size, and has a thickness of 8.3 mm. There’s no word however on the device’s connectivity options, so it will be interesting to see whether it comes with LTE like the J5 and the J7, or follows the J1 route and ignores the feature.
The company is yet to make the Galaxy J2 official, which is why there’s still no word on the pricing of the product. Samsung also has not given any indications about the markets it is looking to target with its affordable Galaxy J2 handset, but it would be a safe bet to say markets like India will be at the top of the list when the device does go official. The Galaxy J5 and J7 have already been released in China for $225 and $290 respectively, and both come with front-facing LED flashes for better-lit selfies. The Galaxy J2 however, doesn’t come with the feature. While the Galaxy J1 has failed to capture the imagination of consumers in India, Samsung will be hoping the Galaxy J2 and subsequent J-series releases will meet a better fate in the country and beyond.
