Mystery 2GB Update Available For Verizon's Galaxy Note 4

A 2GB update is making the rounds to all Verizon Galaxy Note 4 users. The exact nature of the update is unclear, as it is not the 5.1 software update that many Galaxy Note 4 users have been expecting.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was released to the masses in October of 2014, replacing the Galaxy Note 3. The device launched with a 2560 x 1440 Quad HD display with Gorilla Glass 4 integration, either a Snapdragon 805 or Exynos 7 processor (depending on the region), 3GB of RAM and a microSD card slot. The device also took cues from some of its competitors as the Note 4 was released with an aluminum frame, a step forward from Samsung’s usual plastic materials. The Note’s S-Pen also saw some improves as the software was updated to allow some new features and faster access to the S-Pen apps. The final notable revision that the Note 4 saw was Samsung’s decision to step away from using a USB 3.0 port and instead the tech giant used USB 2.0 with a new feature called Fast Charge. Samsung stated the change was due to the fact that the new feature would allow the device to from 0% to 50% in as little as 30 minutes.

In regards to software, the Note 4 shipped with Android 4.4.4 but was quickly upgraded to Android 5.0.1, a mistake on Samsung’s part as many users immediately started to report poor battery life due to the update. While the Note 4 ships with a sizable battery, 3220 mAh, even that was not enough to make up for the coding issues that came with Android 5.0.1. Google has since gone in and made the necessary fixes to the Lollipop update and made them part of the 5.1 OS revision. Even with all of those minor hiccups, however, the device was still an instant hit and Samsung was able to sell over 4.5 million units in the first month alone. A very impressive number when you take into account that the Note 4 did not release to all markets initially due to some issues with the manufacturing process.

With so many things going for the Note 4, it’s a bit odd that Samsung has still not made the necessary changes to bring the device up to date with the latest Android update. Especially when they are releasing a 2GB update which is usually only seen when a device makes a jump from one OS revision to another. For now the update is available to download via Kies, Samsung’s current updating software.
