Many have said that 2K displays – or perhaps more properly named QHD – are overkill on mobile devices, especially 5-inch devices that are not too far from our eyes. We’ve heard some rumors of 4K displays coming to smartphones soon, now Samsung is rumored to be working on an 11K display, that’s right. That would be about 2250PPI, which is just insane. We thought that 500 pixels per inch was more than enough, this more than 4 times that.
The South Korean Government is working with Samsung on this one, and is investing about 26.5 million in the project between now and 2020. They are also planning to have a public prototype available and presented at the 2018 Winter Olympic games in Pyeongchang. Samsung’s other partners consist of about 13 companies that have been working to develop the technology since June 1st.
The screen size for this display is said to be about 5.75-inches, so about the size of the Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy Note 4, but with a whole lot more pixels. No word on whether this is going to be an AMOLED display, but it’s probably safe to assume it will be one. Phone Arena did the math on this to see what the dimensions would be, and it’s about 11,264 Ñ… 6336 pixels. Compared to the 2560×1440 we have now, that’s just insane, right?
We won’t be seeing these displays in smartphones any time soon, thankfully, but it is supposedly going to be ready by 2019. Which gives us a bit of time to enjoy 4K and 8K displays ahead of this 11K display. Hopefully by that time batteries and processors can catch up and be able to actually support that many pixels. While the Snapdragon 800 series can support a 2K display, the batteries definitely cannot. Samsung is planning on using this 11K display for some 3D effects, although details on that are pretty hard to come by. So we’ll just have to speculate on what Samsung is planning to do with this display and all those pixels. It’ll be interesting to see how well it does on battery life, and just how good it really looks.
