A bit of interesting news came out of the Television Academy today. An announcement was made this afternoon that revealed the Television Academy has partnered up with Google to use their Chromecast devices as a means to send along Emmy screeners. This is a move that not only will grant users the ability to view screeners as soon as they become available for those qualified to vote but also a way to cut back on the volume of DVD screeners that would be sent out yearly. Additionally, for those who are qualified to vote within the Television Academy and has yet to pick up a Google Chromecast, Google will personally send out a device, which accordingly over 18,000 of these Chromecast’s have been sent out already.
This new partnership is said to be a multi-year deal though it’s unclear just how long exactly Google’s Chromecast will be used for the Emmy nominated screeners. One of the reasons why the deal was made in the first place is to cut back the amount of piracy issues that come with sending out mass mailings of DVDs. Another reason would likely to become a bit greener with this new environmental friendly alternative.
That’s not to say they won’t be sending out DVD screeners as well, but this new method will trim down a number of DVDs they send out from previous years. For those who are a part of the Television Academy voting comity, the official Academy Emmy website showcased a guide in how the new Google Chromecast method will operate. The simple process includes connecting the Google Chromecast to an HDMI port on your television, connecting to your wireless home network and opening the Television Academy application. We’re assuming that the application will be already installed on the Chromecast before it’s shipped out. Additionally, for those who have yet to receive their Google Chromecast, the officially Emmy website suggests that remaining Chromecast devices will be sent out in the mail on the week of July 20th.
