Nobody seems to be talking about the Stagefright vulnerability of the Android operating system anymore, but most devices are still waiting to be updated so that they can be protected against this threat. Just as a reminder, malware was received on an MMS and intruders were able to control the camera and microphones of the smartphone as well as retrieve some personal information. What makes it really dangerous, is that while those kind of messages are not used as much, most apps would retrieve them by default. Google created a patch for its Nexus devices, but since every manufacturer modifies the software, it’s up to them to create their respective patches.
Carriers have been trying to fight this threat by blocking MMS and companies have committed to updating their devices as much as once a month so that smartphones are protected against this and future vulnerabilities. The patch should be approved by the carriers and then released for their locked devices, so all of the parts should work together to update as many devices as they can, in a timely matter. HTC has updated some of its devices against Stagefright like the One M8 for Sprint and the One M9 for Verizon (which was included as part of the Android 5.1 update).
Today, AT&T is releasing a patch for enhanced security on two HTC devices, the One (M8) and One M9. As for the One (M8), the update has the number 0P6B120 and users will get the over-the-air update if they are on a Wi-Fi connection, the update weighs only 28 MB. The One M9 will receive the OPJA110 update in the same way and it weighs 55.53 MB. As you see, the updates are really lightweight, so users shouldn’t expect any changes in the operating system. The update is mostly rolling out in phases, so it might take a few days before the device gets the notification to start the update. If users want to check if the update is available for their particular device, on the M8, they should go to the gear icon in the notification bar, scroll and tap AT&T Software update and then select Check for updates. On the M9, go to Settings, find General, scroll to About Phone and select Software Update.
