Samsung finally announced the Galaxy Note 5 on Thursday, we pretty much knew what to expect from it as it was leaked in almost every possible way. The design of the new phablet is inspired by the successful design of the flagship of the company, based on a metal and glass construction, but focusing on ergonomics, the back of the phone has been curved. In terms of specs, it features some of the best ones available, including a 5.7-inch QHD display with Super AMOLED technology, an Exynos 7420 processor which has proven to be among the most powerful ones and it’s even got 4 GB of RAM. The company used the same camera configuration as the one on their flagship, which are still considered some of the best ones. Sadly, in favor of the new design, the company didn’t include two of the features that had been present since the first generation of the phablet, a card slot to expand its internal memory and removable battery, so some users don’t consider the new generation to be much of an upgrade.
What came back, though was the S-Pen, which is an integral part of the Note experience and Samsung is showcasing some of its functionality in the first commercial for the new device. It features a new mechanism to take the S-Pen out of the phablet, you just need to press it and it pops out, which is shown at the beginning. Also, it can be seen the newly updated interface for the Air Command, showing the options in a more colorful way. The split screen functionality was pioneered by the Note series, so it shows how to simply drag an element to attach it in order to share it. Cropping an image and saving it and even sketching on a picture to make it more artistic are some of the functionalities that can be seen in the commercial too.
It seems a little odd that Samsung has been making the S-Pen a key differentiator for their Note series, as it can clearly be appreciated in the video. Yet, they are not making the new phablet available in some regions like Europe, deliberately deciding that users in that region don’t use the stylus as much and having to settle for the Galaxy S6 Edge+ which shares most of the internals of the Note 5, without the additional functionality of the “all powerful pen”.
