Following their closest competitor, Samsung, who has recently decided to make a big push and investment in OLED displays. Now LG’s arm, LG Display, is looking to do the same thing. Citing a “next generation push”. They are looking to invest heavily in OLED so they can steer the company away from price wars, as well as have amazing displays that are better than the competition’s.
It’s said that the South Korean company is going to put around 10 trillion won or $8.47 billion USD, into OLED displays by the year 2018. Primarily for large products like TVs as well as flexible displays for smartphones and wearables. Which we have actually already seen with the LG G Flex line. LG Display is also looking to bring OLED to signage and automobiles. They will also use some spending for premium LCD products. According to a statement made by LG to Reuters. Recently, LG has been the biggest manufacturer of OLED. Some of the advantages of using OLED is that it has improved color rendition and power consumption. Right now LG is the top LCD manufacturer and is hoping that working with OLED early can give them a leg up over their competition.
Currently OLED is used in a few products, like Dell’s Venue 8 and 10 7000 series tablets. And to be honest, the displays on those two tablets look amazing. We also have OLED, or rather Plastic OLED/POLED, displays on the LG G Flex and G Flex 2. While the original G Flex display did not look all that great, the second generation G Flex looked a whole lot better. Of course, that could also be attributed to the fact that it is a smaller panel with a higher resolution.
Right now, LG Display and LG Electronics are the only ones using OLED. As Samsung has said OLED is to expensive for TV’s. Samsung is also the largest TV manufacturer, at least for now. Hopefully they’ll turn to OLED soon, as OLED displays look pretty amazing. LG makes some great displays, although they are not perfect. We definitely can’t wait to see how far their OLED displays come in the next few years.
