Tablets sales aren’t exactly as good as they used to be, it seems like bigger screens on smartphones (phablets) are interfering with tablet sales significantly. That’s only a guess on my part, but having a 5.5-6” device has become pretty common, and many consumers really don’t see a need to have a 7-8” tablet as well. That being said, we haven’t exactly seen many tablets being launched to the market lately. We do see one from time to time, but that’s nothing compared to previous years.
That being said, LG has just announced a successor to the G Pad tablet which was launched almost two years ago. Keep in mind that the company has launched three additional G Pad’s in 2014 though, the 7, 8 and 10.1-inch models. The LG G Pad 2 was quietly launched by the company, and it doesn’t seem overly impressive, but this is supposed to be a mid-range tablet, not a high-end one. The LG G Pad 2 sports an 8-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display along with 1.5GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (expandable up to 128GB via microSD card). The device is powered by the Snapdragon 400 quad-core SoC running at 1.2GHz, and will ship with a 4,200mAh battery on the inside. Android 5.0 Lollipop comes pre-installed here, and the device also features a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. The 2-megapixel snapper is available up front, and will do just fine for selfies and video calls, should you choose to use it.
Now, compared to the original LG G Pad (8.3-inch one), this is certainly a less impressive device. The original LG G Pad sported 2GB of RAM, and a 1080p display. But we’re not going to do that, this is an 8-inch device and if you compare it to the 8-inch LG G Pad, you’ll see that LG improved this tablet’s specs. The 8-inch LG G Pad (2014) shipped with 16GB of internal storage, and 1GB of RAM, while it sported the same SoC this new variant includes. LG Has also slightly redesigned the new model, but it’s still made out of plastic it seems. That being said, this device was introduced in Korea, and we have no idea if LG plans to release it outside of their homeland. Either way, stay tuned for additional info.
