Each year, OpenSignal puts out a report showing the most popular Android devices, as well as manufacturers and versions of Android. Now the table showing the most popular manufacturers can’t be too surprising, with Samsung having the biggest part of that pie. However, they own about a third of that market now, after owning nearly half of it in 2012. They are undoubtedly still king in Android, but they are seeing some stiff competition. Behind Samsung is LG, Sony, and Motorola in that order. However, if you add Lenovo and Motorola together, they would likely be right behind Samsung. Seeing as Lenovo does own Motorola now.
What else is interesting here is that Samsung’s Galaxy S3 (the GT-I9300) is still the most popular Android device in the world. That’s three years after it initially launched. Pretty crazy right? Followed by the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5. Not a huge surprise there. What’s also interesting here is that the Moto G variants and the LG G3 and G2 all have a pretty significant rectangle in this chart.
OpenSignal stated that there were over 24,093 unique devices that appeared this year. That includes all of the variants of the Galaxy S6, or the HTC One M9, etc. Compared to around 18,796 last year. As far as manufacturers go, we’re looking at 1,294 manufacturers this year alone.
When it comes to the OS, KitKat leads the way with 39%, followed by Android 4.2 Jelly Bean at 15.9%, Android 5.0 Lollipop at 15.5%, and the percentages get smaller from there. Considering Lollipop launched almost a year ago, that’s still a pretty big showing from Lollipop. With the previous version still being on the majority of smartphones out there. Who remembers how long Gingerbread had the most users?
They also have a graph showing the most popular smartphone maker in a variety of countries. To no surprise, Samsung takes most of them. Including the US, Canada, Brazil, Russia, most of Europe, Australia, Indonesia and a few others. Also to no surprise, Xiaomi owns China. While Sony owns quite a few including India, Egypt, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia. HTC, surprisingly owns Saudi Arabia, and that’s all OpenSignal shows for the company.
