Oppo is one of the more successful Chinese makers of mobile devices. As is the case with most other manufacturers from that region, this company has been focusing on offering smartphones with good designs and good specs at a lower price point that some of the better-known brands. It may not have a great presence in the U.S. but the company would probably like to change that and it has now released the Oppo R5s, which was made official a few days ago.
The Oppo R5s uses almost the same hardware as the R5 which was announced last year and in fact, it was the world slimmest phone for a short period of time. The new phone has some upgraded specs like the 3 GB of RAM which is included, while it also doubles its internal storage, so now 32 GB is available. Although, there is still no expandable memory on offer. The display measures 5.2-inches and uses AMOLED technology to provide vibrant and saturated colors with a very high contrast ratio, its resolution is Full HD, making up for a 424 ppi density. The screen is covered with Gorilla Glass 3 to add protection and it supports input with gloves or even wet hands, although it’s not certified against water.
Powering up the Oppo R5s is the octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, which is clocked at 1.5 GHz. The main camera has a Sony Exmor IMX214 BSI sensor with 13-megapixels of resolution. The front-facing camera has a 5-megapixel sensor with an 83° wide angle lens. Both cameras have an aperture of f/2.0. The phone dimensions are 148.9 x 74.5 x 4.85 mm making it extremely thin and it weighs 155 grams. The Color OS 2.0 version runs on top of Android 4.4 (KitKat) and there’s no word if this device will get updated to a newer version. The battery has a mere 2,000 mAh capacity, but it charges quite fast, as a five-minute charge will give you 2 hours of call time and 30 minutes will charge the battery 75%. The price of the unlocked R5s is $220 for a very limited time, with the offer price due to end on August 27. It is said to support LTE bands 1/4/7, so you might want to check with the carrier if you are interested.
