Is Samsung Looking To launch New 'On' Series Smartphones?

There were reports some time back, which claimed Samsung was apparently looking to curb its enthusiasm when it comes to launching multiple variants of same devices at different price points with confusing nomenclature. While the reports got a lot of publicity in the media, several months have passed since then, but Samsung doesn’t seem to have changed it’s tried and tested strategy. A few days back, reports suggested that the company is fixing to introduce a whole new range of smartphones – the O series, in addition to its already existing S, A, J, Z, K and E ranges, not to mention its Note range! SamMobile is now reporting about two devices, ostensibly called the Galaxy Grand On and the Galaxy Mega On, which it claims, are part of Samsung’s previously rumored O Series of smartphones. The website also claims to have got a whiff of the hardware specifications of the two devices, which are presumably being readied for a commercial launch later this year.

Coming to the hardware specs of the aforesaid smartphones, the Galaxy Mega On will supposedly come with the model number SM-G600, and feature a 5.5-inch 720p display. The device will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 chipset, which has a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz. The handset will also have 1.5 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. The phone will also have a microSD card slot for capacity expansion. The device will come with a 3,000 mAh battery, and feature a 13-megapixel camera on the rear along with a 5-megapixel camera on the front. The phone is said to measure 151.5 mm X 77.5 mm X 8.2 mm, and weigh 145 grams.

As for the Galaxy Grand On, the smartphone will come with the model number SM-G550, and sport a smaller 5-inch display with the same 720p resolution. This device however, will have an Exynos chip under its hood, rather than a Qualcomm one, unlike the Galaxy Mega On. SamMobile believes the exact SoC will be the Exynos 3475, which has an integrated quad-core CPU clocked at 1.3 GHz. The device will also have 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of expandable internal storage. The cameras will have same-sized sensors as the ones on the Galaxy Mega On, but the phone will have a smaller 2,600 battery on account of its smaller screen. While both devices will run Android 5.1 Lollipop, the Grand On is said to measure 142 — 71.9 — 8.5 mm and weigh in at 140 grams. There are no indications about probable launch dates or pricing of either device as of now.
