Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+, the hardware design of both handsets didn’t come as much of a surprise as they both were massively leaked, plus, it was only logical for the company to take some inspiration from the design of their current flagship offerings, which was praised all over and was seen as a much welcome change. The announcement focused on some software enhancements that would make the new phones more compelling, the Note 5 has some exclusive functionality as it includes the S-Pen, but the Galaxy S6 Edge+ shares most of the specs with its smaller version, so there’s no reason why the new features would be exclusive to the new phone.
Today, Sprint has announced that a new update for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge is available, bringing some of the new functions from the new phones. The latest version of the software is listed as G920PVPU2BOH1 for the Galaxy S6 and G925PVPU2BOH1 for the Galaxy S6 Edge and it includes the following changes for both devices: Samsung Pay, Live broadcasting via Yahoo!, High-Quality Audio (with Samsung headsets), UI updates and Bug Fixes.
Samsung Pay is obviously one of the biggest additions as it brings a mobile payment system that is compatible with most of the current hardware used in retail stores, restaurants and other places that take credit cards. It is supposed to launch on September 28 in the U.S., still, Samsung is reportedly doing a beta test starting August 25, so it makes sense for the update to come this early (it could take a couple of days before it reaches every handset). It seems a little odd that the live broadcasting feature uses Yahoo!, as the company was supposed to do this along YouTube like in the new phones. Some of the UI changes might be the new iconography that was seen on both of the new handsets, which provide a more consistent look, but no specifics was given regarding this aspect. The update could also bring the Apps Edge functionality to the S6 Edge, but it is not yet confirmed. The update will arrive over-the-air, but users can check manually if the update for their phone is already available.
