Earlier today, we talked about Xiaomi, their upcoming Redmi 2 Prime handset, and the fact this phone might be the first Xiaomi-branded handset to be manufactured in India. Well, that assumption was spot on, as Xiaomi has just announced the Redmi 2 Prime smartphone in India. This device is manufactured in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Xiaomi’s and Foxconn’s factory in India. The Redmi 2 Prime is basically a more powerful variant of the Redmi 2 handset which was announced at the beginning of this year. Anyhow, let’s see what this handset has to offer, shall we.
The Redmi 2 Prime sports a 4.7-inch 720p (1280 x 720) IPS display with AGC Dragontrail Glass protection. The device also ships with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card up to 32GB). This phone is powered by the Snapdragon 410 64-bit quad-core SoC clocked at 1.2GHz along with an Adreno 305 GPU for graphics. Two SIM card slots are available here, and same can be said about a 2,200mAh battery. The 8-megapixel shooter (BSI sensor, f/2.2 aperture, OmniVision sensor) is located on the back of the Redmi 2 Prime, and a 2-megapixel snapper can be found up front. 4G LTE connectivity is also available here, and Android 4.4 KitKat comes pre-installed on this phone with Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 OS available on top of Google’s operating system.
As you can see, these specs actually go hand-in-hand to the previously leaked listing on Flipkart. The Redmi 2 Prime is literally a Redmi 2 handset with somewhat better specs on board. So, how much does this handset costs? Well, the Redmi 2 Prime is priced at Rs. 6,999 ($110), which is a very affordable price point. The device will be available on Mi.com, and across a number of Xiaomi’s partners in India (Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal) starting today.
What about availability in other regions? Well, Xiaomi didn’t really elaborate on that, but we’re almost certain that this device will hit China sooner or later, and other Asian regions might follow soon after, and same can be said about Brazil where Xiaomi started selling their devices quite recently. There you have it, the Redmi 2 Prime is not official, we’ll report back if any additional info pops up.
