Alcatel OneTouch Announces the 4-inch Pixi First Smartphone

Alcatel OneTouch have just taken the wraps off of a few new smartphones today, including the Pixi First. Which is their entry-level smartphone. According to the company “a first class smartphone at an entry level price”. Alcatel OneTouch is the fourth largest handset maker in North America, and with these new smartphones they are looking to make the jump to number three or even higher. The company also touts that they are the world’s “fastest growing smartphone brand”. Largely due to the success of the Idol 3 which was launched at Mobile World Congress in March.

The Pixi First features a 4-inch WVGA display, that’s a 800×480 resolution TFT panel. It’s running on Android 4.4 KitKat, somewhat understandable given it’s price, but would still like to see Lollipop here. We’re looking at a quad-core 1.2GHz processor here with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage inside. The user will see about 2GB of free storage on first boot. There is a microSD card slot however, that supports up to 32GB. We’re also looking at a 1450mAh battery powering the Pixi First, which Alcatel OneTouch rates as 300 hours of standby time and 7 hours talk time. For cameras, we have a 5MP camera on teh back with LED flash, and a 2MP front-facing camera.

As far as connectivity goes, we have WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi Direct, USB tethering, and Bluetooth 2.1. As well as GPS and FM Radio. For bands we have:

UMTS 900/2100

GSM 850/900/1800/1900

So no 3G here, but it is a rock bottom price for the Pixi First. Alcatel OneTouch is offering the Pixi First in four colors soft slate, metal silver, metal gold and rose gold. This makes the Pixi First a great first smartphone for your kids. With it being relatively inexpensive – pricing not yet announced – as well as still being fast and having connectivity to mobile networks it will do everything a teenager needs. The Pixi family also grew with a new tablet this week in IFA, so stay tuned for that a little later today. We got some hands on with the Pixi First today, and it’s a pretty nice device, albeit pretty small.
