Amazon's Prime Music Acquires Universal Music Catalogue

Streaming music services have seemingly become the dominant medium these days in terms of how people listen to music, and it’s no wonder considering how amazing it is having such huge libraries of songs and albums available at just the touch of a button. One would need to look no further than Spotify to see an example of a successful music streaming service that has become an integral part of daily life for millions of people. Spotify, with its 75 million active users, might have cornered the market on music streaming services however as other companies that have tried to venture into this medium have not been met with as much success. Apple launched their Apple Music streaming service just a few months ago and it was basically greeted with a collective yawn, which came as a surprise considering what a power player Apple is in the wireless technology world. Amazon is another tech giant that launched a streaming music service with their Prime Music, but it too hasn’t had the type of success seen by Spotify. Many believe that Amazon’s Prime Music hasn’t caught on mostly because the collection of songs and albums it offers isn’t as large as those of the competition.

This lack of a sizeable music catalogue has now been improved however as Universal Music Group has now made its catalogue of artists available on Amazon Prime for customers in the United States and the United Kingdom. Universal Music is home to some of today’s most popular musical acts including Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, The Weeknd and Sam Smith. Looking at that lineup one can’t help but agree that acquiring artists from Universal is definitely a step in the right direction for Amazon Prime. In order to showcase these popular artists Amazon Prime has created special playlists for customers to access.

While Amazon Prime’s music catalogue still has a long way to go in terms of being a legitimate rival to Spotify’s 30 million songs, this is still great news for them and their customers. It is also good news even if you are not an Amazon Prime customer as the more these various companies become competitive with each other the more options the everyday consumer has in terms of how and when to spend that hard earned dollar.
