If you’re in the market for a brand new vehicle then you might be interested in knowing that Chevrolet has made an announcement regarding some of their select 2016 vehicle model lineups. These select models will be able to use Android Auto but will also be required to go through a software update. Updates are being performed by Chevrolet dealers and apparently they are working hard to make sure these updates are placed before consumers make any additional purchases. Take a look at what Chevrolet 2016 vehicle models will be available with Android Auto support.
For those who have never heard of Android Auto, this is Google’s answer to Apples CarPlay. Essentially, consumers will be able to plug in their compatible Android-running handset into their vehicle and swap out the standard MyLink system to display an Android Lollipop-based operating system. This is a customized Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system that will allow consumers to use select applications within their vehicles touchscreen display. For instance, the in-car display could feature applications such as Google Maps, Google Now, Google Play Music, along with third party applications like Spotify and Pandora. Furthermore, a consumer smartphone can be used to receive and conduct calls through Bluetooth. All of this is done by simply plugging your handset into your vehicle.
There’s been a bigger push for vehicle manufacturers to offer compatibility with both Google’s Android Auto along with Apple’s CarPlay for iOS devices and now we know Chevrolet is showing their support for their consumers. As mentioned, the update will have to come through a Chevrolet dealer and there is a total of fourteen models featuring MyLink system’s that could run the update. News of the recent software update came directly from Alan Batey, President GM North America and Global Chevrolet which praised the hard work of their engineering team while also stating that they are hard at work in making sure dealers can process the software update as fast as possible to avoid inconveniencing consumers.
Chevrolet will be enabling Android Auto on the following cars; Spark, Cruze (Excludes Limited), Malibu (Excludes Limited), Camaro, Camaro Convertible, Silverado, Silverado HD, Impala, Volt, Corvette, Corvette Convertible, Colorado, Tahoe, Suburban.
