A new device going by the moniker SM-J200H cropped up in Samsung’s support page. It seems the launch of a successor in the super-affordable J line-up is pretty close as FCC recently certified the Galaxy J2. Reports say that Samsung sent the device to India for extensive testing and it seems those tests went flawlessly. Its predecessor, Galaxy J1 was released just about half a year ago as a value for money phone. And the specifications of the Galaxy J2 indicate a significant upgrade over the Galaxy J1.
Galaxy J2 sports a 4.5 inch TFT LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 480p, in-house Exynos 3475 CPU (32 bit) clocked at 1.2 GHz, and packs 1.5 GB of RAM with an expandable storage of 8 GB, with a 2000 mAh battery powering the device. For the photography enthusiasts, the phone includes a 5 MP back camera, and a 2 MP front camera. All of this has been integrated into a phone of just 136 x 69 x 8.3 mm, with Android 5.1.1 built in. Galaxy J2 comes as a major upgrade from the Galaxy J1, which had a 4.3-inch screen, a meagre 512 MB of RAM and an 1850 mAh battery. Almost all aspects of the Galaxy J1 has been upgraded in the J2, which raises the question if the new phone would be as affordable as its predecessor. Successors are priced similarly to the previous phone in the line-up but the Galaxy J2 doesn’t seem to be a $115 phone, which was the launch price of the Galaxy J1.
The firmware page on Sammobile also reveals the release of the first firmware package for the SM-J200H, which further consolidates expectations for an early launch date. Details about physical build quality and the design of the phone are still unknown. Samsung announced Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 in the previous month, but they have much higher specs and cannot be compared to the Galaxy J2. No details on pricing and availability have been revealed, though rumours are that Samsung will launch the phone in emerging markets like India, other Asian countries and parts of Latin America. Samsung Galaxy J2 is expected to be a nice little mid-range phone, but it is not recommended for everyone, especially power users.
