Today is one of the more exciting dates in the Android fan’s calendar as it’s the day when Google unveil their latest Nexus products. Today we’ve seen two new Nexus smartphones, the mid-range Nexus 5X and the higher end Nexus 6P. Let’s take a look at the top ten features of the Google Nexus 6P, which is manufactured by Huawei for Google.
The first feature is the construction of the device, because Huawei have used an aviation-grade, aluminum unibody chassis for a combination of strength and attractive looks. Google state that the design has been precision-engineered, and it’s their first metal unibody Nexus device. The second feature is the screen, which is a 5.7-inch AMOLED panel of QHD resolution, or 1440p, or 2,560 by 1,440 pixels. Google describe the AMOLED screen as their most accurate yet. The Nexus 6P will be available with three memory capacities – 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB – and in three colors, Aluminum (silver), Graphite (black) and Frost (white). Given the high end features of the Nexus 6P, it’s comforting that Google is not releasing the device as a 16 GB model.
For photography, Google have given the Nexus 6P their most advanced camera yet. This is of 12MP in resolution, but as photography fans will know, the number of pixels is only partially relevant. The size of the pixels is also important and in the case of the Nexus 6P, Huawei and Google have used a 1.55 micron-pixel sensor. The larger the pixel, the greater the light captured when taking an image, which is of more importance in low light conditions. In conjunction with the camera, the Nexus 6P ships with Google Photos included, which has some new functionality just added. This includes the ability to cast to a local Chromecast for displaying your photographs and videos on a larger screen, even before backing up the images to your Google account. Google have also sharpened up how Google Photos can retrieve saved pictures by allowing customers to use nicknames or titles, such as “mom,” which may be searched in the usual fashion. The software includes multiple search terms, for for example searching “mom cat” or “mom and dad” will show those relevant photographs. The service will initially be launched for the US market but other regions of the world are sure to follow.
Another new feature of the Nexus 6P is the USB Type C port on the device, which includes Quick Charge as standard. How quick is quick? Google’s information states that just ten minutes on charge is enough to give the device up to seven hours of battery life. Another new feature is the fingerprint scanner, located under the camera module on the back of the device. This may be used to unlock the device and launch applications such as Android Pay.
However, the last two features mean that customers may not necessarily need to use their fingerprints to unlock the device: the Nexus 6P comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which includes Google Now on Tap combined with the always-listening functionality. Customers will be able to set reminders, perform web searches and similar by their voice without unlocking or even touching the device.
