Today, Google and LG renewed their partnership in the Nexus world. Announcing the Nexus 5X, with the tagline “The All Around Champ is Back”. Leading up to the Nexus 6 announcement last year, many were hoping for a Nexus 5 refresh because the Nexus 6 was just too big for many people. Google says they wanted the Nexus 5 back as well. So they brought it back with this year’s release of Marshmallow. The Nexus 5X is the smaller of the two Nexus devices announced today, with the other being the Huawei-made Nexus 6P.
Google has outlined 10 things to know about the brand new Nexus 5X, that was announced today. First up is the camera. Google says that the Nexus 5X is “ready for any close up” touting it’s 1.55 micron size sensor on the back of the device. Because the sensor is physically larger, it can let more light than just about every smartphone on the market. Google even showed a few examples of this on stage today. They also tout the “speedy Google Camera” app, and that you won’t ever miss a shot.
Next up is USB Type-C. Google sort of teased this at Google I/O earlier this year. But USB Type-C is here on the Nexus 5X. Which means you can plug in the Nexus 5X anyway you want. It also charges pretty quickly. Google says that 10 minutes of charging can get you about 4 hours of battery life. Of course that’s subjective.
Google Photos also got an update today, and that’s another point that Google is touting with the Nexus 5X. So you can easy cast your photos and videos from Google Photos to any Chromecast device. Other updates for Google Photos include being able to label people however you want. As well as pooling photos and videos together and get updates when new moments are added without needing to set anything up.
Finally, Marshmallow. Android 6.0 is here. Google touts Marshmallow as bringing the best Android performance as well as new features to help you get the most out of your smartphone. With features like Now on Tap, which gives you answers in the moment. You can also say “OK Google” from anywhere in the phone without using your hands. Marshmallow also brings better battery life with smarter software and you can enjoy clarity and control of the data you care about with the new app permissions announced in Marshmallow.
