Google’s event has now come to a close and the hype around what was to be announced is slowly subsiding. Now of course, the hype surrounds when will you be able to get your hands on the various products and services that Google did announce. Well, if you were one of those who pre-ordered the LG Nexus 5 or the Huawei Nexus 6P already, then you will have to wait a few weeks for your pre-orders to be fulfilled. Thankfully though, Google did make a few software announcements too and it looks like one of them is already arriving that you can make do with in the meantime.
Prior to the event, it was rumored that Google was planning a major(is) update to Google Photos. This seemed to be the case and Google did announce yesterday that Google Photos was seeing a larger than usual update coming through soon enough. The big talking points of the update was the ability to now use Chromecast with Google Photos as well as a new custom tagging ability for people. That said, there was no firm details on when the update would begin its roll out, although it was presumed sooner rather than later.
That update does now look to be on the way with some reports coming in that they have received the update via OTA. For those who have not received the update, then it has been captured and you can download and sideload the update to your device. In terms of the new features though, they seem to be a bit hit or miss. It seems Chromecast support is active in the update although it might not be for your device straight away. In contrast, it does seem that the custom people naming feature is live for most, if not all. Either way, if you would like to give the new update a try and see what features are working for you, then you can by downloading the APK through the link below. For reference, the update weighs in at 22.5 MB in size and will bring your version of Google Photos up to v1.6.
