Hands-On With the Insane, 4K Xperia Z5 Premium

Despite the fact that Samsung and others have announced products for the Fall before IFA, the first big day of the event in Berlin, Germany was far from unexciting. We know how much the Huawei Watch will cost, it’s now available for pre-order and the ZenWatch 2 was priced as well. As many expected them to do, Sony announced the new Xperia Z5 line of products, and while the inclusion of a new camera and fingerprint sensor have offered Sony fans something genuinely new to sink their teeth into, the larger, Xperia Z5 Premium has stolen the show. It’s a little bigger with a 5.5-inch display instead of a 5.2-inch display, but it’s the resolution that counts here. There’s a 4K display used in the Xperia Z5 Premium.

That gives the 5.5-inch smartphone a pixel density of 806 pixels per inch. That’s insane. If we believe that the average human eye can’t accurately make out images better than 300 pixels per inch then the Xperia Z5 Premium far outstrips that. Whether or not Sony have created this “just because they can” or not remains to be seen, but the final pricing – which has yet to be announced – will probably confirm how serious Sony are about their new display. One thing’s for sure though, the display here looks incredible, but a 2560 x 1440 panel – as found in the majority of 5.5-inch and above phones these days – might suffice perfectly for a lot of users.

Still, the overall package here is pretty stellar, and while the Snapdragon 810 inside here might have some heat issues, the Adreno 430 GPU is geared up for 4K action. Coupled with the fact that this supports up to 200GB microSD cards and users might be able to actually consume some 4K content on this thing. Measuring in at 154.4mm x 75.8mm and 7.8mm thick, it’s not that much larger than the Xperia Z5 and it retains the same IP65 and IP68 water and dust-resistance of its siblings.
