There has been a lot of announcements coming through already this morning and this is largely to be expected. Google’s Nexus event is one which is always attracts a good deal of attention and this year has been no different. However, there has been a couple of differences this year, compared to the previous year. Firstly, Google has not released a smartphone and a tablet and instead opted to go for two smartphones. One by LG and one by Huawei. The latter of these marks another difference as it is the first time Google has partnered up with Huawei, which also means this is the first time a Chinese OEM has been called on to make a Nexus smartphone.
There is also another difference this year and this is the emphasis that all manufactures have placed on implementing fingerprint scanners into their devices and the two Nexus manufacturers are no exception. However, those who are have some experience with Huawei, will already be aware that this is an area the company has been perfecting their craft in for some time. A number of Huawei devices that have been released this year are already sporting fingerprint scanner and as such, it is worth taking a closer look at what is on offer with the Huawei Nexus 6P fingerprint sensor.
First off, the fingerprint reader makes use of what Google refers to as “Nexus Imprint” and as a whole can perform faster and more accurately read fingerprints compared to what is available on other smartphones. Therefore, you can expect this to be a very quick and responsive fingerprint sensor. In fact, according to the announcement, the fingerprint scanner can read fingerprints in about 600 milliseconds. As this is a Google device and one which come running on the latest version of Android, Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). As a result, the Nexus 6P is built for Google’s other highly reported on feature Android Pay and the fingerprint scanner is also designed to make better use of this service. Once setup and good to go, the fingerprint scanner is able to be used as an entry point to your device and also as a way to pay for goods using Android Pay. Not to mention, third party apps will also be more able to make use of the fingerprint scanner more naturally due to the fingerprint relevant APIs in use.
Of course, there will no doubt be a ton of other features which make use of the fingerprint scanner too and these will come to light, the more the device is encountered over the coming weeks and months.
