We’ve seen some companies experimenting with curved displays, the first consumer smartphone was the LG G Flex and its huge 6-inch P-OLED display which was curved from top to bottom. Samsung claims to have been invested on curved displays for a long time, and they certainly have released a lot of phones with this kind of displays. Shortly after LG released its curved phone, Samsung released the Galaxy Round with a 5.7-inch display curved from the sides. We could consider these two phones as experiments as they were not widely available.
Samsung then included a curved display as a special edition of one of its most popular handsets and called it the Galaxy Note Edge. The display was mostly flat, but featured a curve on the right side, creating a sort of secondary mini display which would be used to display some additional information. The company made curved displays really popular with the Galaxy S6 Edge and its screen curved on both sides, with some reports suggesting that they couldn’t even meet the demands for that particular phone. More recently, Samsung released a larger version of that phone called Galaxy S6 Edge+.
Now, there’s a new rumor suggesting that another company is willing to offer some handsets with curved screens. The company is the Chinese manufacturer Huawei, which according to the source, will release a new series of high-end phones on the first half of the year. Those phones are supposed to be very popular as it is said that the company plans to produce as many as 3 million devices per month. The top offering from the new series is supposed to use a double curved screen with a 2K resolution and apparently, they will purchase this component from Samsung. It is no secret that Huawei is seriously investing in the design of their devices, but are curved displays just a design feature? Or could they ever bring more functionality to current offerings? After all, the company implemented Force Touch in one of their phones, optimizing the software to use this technology. Perhaps even more form-factors will be available as curved screens become more popular. Only time will tell.
