Meizu Co-Founder: New Flagship Will Sport A 1080p Display

Back

Meizu has been all over the new recently. The company seem to be working on a new flagship which will be announced later this month according to our source. The Meizu ‘NIUX’ has first surfaced on AnTuTu, and then recently its source code popped up as well. This will be the company’s new smartphone, but not the MX5 Pro as some of you might think. I don’t know if you recall, but Meizu’ VP has confirmed that the ‘MX Pro’ line is going away altogether, and that the MX5 Pro probably won’t launch. Well, we know that for a fact now, this will be a completely new device and won’t be a part of Meizu’s existing line of devices.

That being said, company’s co-founder and president, Bai Yongxiang, has confirmed via Weibo (Chinese social network) that the upcoming device will sport a 1080p display. He basically said that there’s no point in including 2K displays on smartphones, and that 1080p displays are a more logical choice taking everything into account. This confirmation actually goes hand-in-hand to the leaks we’ve seen thus far. So, what will Meizu NIUX’s specs look like? Well, the phone will sport a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display and 3 or 4GB of RAM (two variants are possible actually). The device will be powered by Samsung’s 14nm Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor, and the device will be made out of metal, most probably. The 21-megapixel camera will reportedly going to be located on the back of this phone, and a 5-megapixel snapper will be available up front. Android 5.1 Lollipop will come pre-installed on this device with Meizu’s Flyme UI 5.0 being installed on top of Google’s OS.

That is more or less it as far as specs go. Only the 1080p display is confirmed at this moment, so consider other specs only rumors at this point. We still don’t know the exact date Meizu intends to release this phone, but you can expect it to launch before the end of this month. It is actually rather interesting Meizu decided to launch a new flagship so soon after they announced the MX5. The Meizu MX5 has been launched in June, and if you recall, Meizu did something similar last year. The company has announced the MX4 back in September last year, and the MX4 Pro followed in November. Either way, stay tuned for more details, we’ll report back soon.
