The end of September is coming, and it is also the end of Q3, a date where we expected the release of the latest version of Google’s operating system called Android 6.0 Marshmallow. There’s a pretty good chance that the final release of the OS will be introduced at the event that the company planned on September 29 as the introduction of two Nexus devices is also expected. Now, Sam Mobile has reported that Samsung is planning a major update for their flagship models including the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and the recently announced Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5.
There are not many details about the update, but some speculation has led to believe that it might be about Marshmallow, as there are no other major updates for the operating system and it is said to be “bigger than the usual updates that we see now and then”. Samsung has a reputation of building the updates for their flagships quite fast and the company is always one of the first ones to update their phones with any release of a new version of the OS. Still, it would be odd that Samsung could be working with Android 6.0, as the final build hasn’t even been released. Android 6.0 doesn’t bring as many visual changes that would be appreciated by most users, which could allow OEMs to customize it faster than previous versions, but the changes and new features are more than welcome, plus timely updates are always valued by most users and could mean some loyalty towards a certain company, so they are probably working on bringing the update as fast as they can.
The new firmware version for the Galaxy S6 Edge is G925FXXU3COI6 and the previous one was G925FXXU2COH2, so the change from the U2 to the U3 version indicates a quite major revision of the software. Of course, another possibility is that some features introduced with the newer phones could be added to the original Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, but then there would not be a reason to list the newer models as getting this update. Of course, it might just bring additional stability to the current build for all of those devices, but let’s hope for something bigger, as all of them are listed among the first ones to get Android 6.0.
