Sony will launch a “High on detail – Low on pocket” device in India on September 9th, according to a teaser posted by the company on Twitter. While the teaser comes with a partial image of what looks like a smartphone, the company did not mention any particular device by name. The Indian tech media however, is abuzz with expectations for the company to launch the Xperia M5 at its press conference on Thursday, given that the device was officially announced by the Japanese consumer electronics giant last month. The M5 is Sony’s effort to establish a more meaningful presence at the mid-range of the smartphone market, having largely ignored the segment for long. At the IFA trade show in Berlin last week, Sony introduced its Xperia Z5 range of premium smartphones, which are expected to come to Indian shores sometime later this month.
Coming to the hardware specs of the Xperia M5, the device will feature a 5-inch Full HD 1080p display panel, and will be powered by MediaTek’s Helio X10 (MT6795T) SoC, which comes with an integrated 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at a maximum of 2.2 GHz and a PowerVR G6200 GPU clocked at 700 MHz. The handset will come with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded by up to 200 GB with the help of a microSD card. The smartphone will come with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, no doubt with the company’s Xperia UI laid on top.
As for the Xperia M5’s imaging credentials, the device will come with a 21.5-megapixel primary camera with an Exmor RS sensor, f/2.2 aperture, hybrid autofocus, LED flash and 4K video recording abilities, while the selfie-cam will have a rather large 13-megapixel sensor, in keeping with the times. The handset will also have an FM radio with RDS and come with an IP65/68 rating, which denotes protection from liquid and dust. The smartphone will measure 145 mm in length, 72 mm in width and 7.3 mm in thickness and weigh 143 grams. The phone will come with a 2,600 mAh battery and support LTE and HSPA+, alongside dual band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.1, GPS and NFC.
