Sony is well-known for its eccentric smartphone designs, but the spotlight of every Sony flagship phone rests on the camera performance, and Sony has always managed to live up to the expectations. That includes the newly announced Sony Xperia Z5, the successor to the iconic Xperia Z line-up flagship phones released by Sony. And they have seriously ramped up camera performance with this new launch, with the inclusion of the new super-fast HybridAF focusing technology, as the company likes to call it. Sony has included a new 1/2.3″ EXMOR RS sensor with a 23 megapixels camera in the Xperia Z5, making it a serious contender for the battle of the best camera-phone in the market, and also proving to be a significant upgrade over the Z4, though daily performance is yet to be seen
The Sony Xperia Z5 doubles as a full-fledged camcorder, with the ability to record videos in 4K at 29 frames per second, which is incredible for a smartphone. Sony has also included the option of recording in 1080p at both 30 and 60 frames per second, making it highly practical for users who don’t yet have a means of watching 4K content or have other uses for the internal storage, as 4K video content is infamous for its huge size. The downside to this is that the improved SteadyShot stabilization is only available in 1080p recording mode at 30 frames per second, making the 4K and 1080p at 60 fps shaky in comparison, considering how well stabilization works.
The specifications look really good on paper, but in real life, the phone manages to live up to the claims of the Japanese manufacturer of implementing super-fast focusing technology, or HybridAF, as the camera is particularly responsive when used in Continuous mode (CAF). The shooter is quick in determining how the action is happening, and actual 4k footage posted below shows that the camera never flinches in focusing on subjects, whether they are at the foreground or the background, making this a really good contender for shooting professional videos. Sony has always been on the forefront of camera technology in smartphones, and Z5 carries on this legacy.
