Wherever you live, one issue that has always been problematic for mobile device users is mobile coverage. While this has greatly improved over the years with carriers investing heavier in their networks, what is contributing to a much greater level of coverage is the implementation of Wi-Fi. Subsequently, the implementation of Wi-Fi calling. That said, this is still an area which for some is a long way off. While here in the U.S., the likes of T-Mobile have been declaring as much as 7 million of their customers have used Wi-Fi calling, other regions have not adopted the use of WiFi networks as readily
In the UK for instance, the UK carrier Three has been making a big push recently for the use of VoLTE. While Vodafone, has made it clear that they are pushing forward with Wi-Fi calling. The main difference between the two, being VoLTE allows for a greater emphasis on clearer calls while being able to maintain data services and all through a cellular signal and Wi-Fi calling looks to make use of Wi-Fi networks to improve quality and is especially useful in areas which have poor cellular coverage to begin with. In terms of Vodafone, so far, that pushing forward has been more beneficial to iOS users than Android ones. Well, that may be about to change as Vodafone has today confirmed that Wi-Fi calling will be coming soon to some Android Devices.
“Some” is probably a bit of an overstatement as the press release only details Samsung devices as those which will next be able to take advantage of Wi-Fi calling in the UK on Vodafone. In particular, owners of either the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. In terms of when the service will go live, this point remains a little but more vague as the company are simply listing ‘this autumn’ as the scheduled roll out time. Although, they have confirmed that starting from today, those who wish to register their interest (and presumably own one of the two Galaxy S6 devices) can now do so.
