Today saw Motorola and Verizon finally take the wraps off their latest DROID device, the DROID Turbo 2 and the DROID MAXX 2. Both have been the subject to quite a few rumors over the past few weeks and today, the two companies finally confirmed all the details about the new devices. While most of the specs are in line with what had been expected, so far, it is the more DROIDish features which have been attracting the headlines. Most notably the battery life and what Motorola refers to as their “shatterproof screen”.
According to Motorola, the screen has taken the best part of the last three years to produce and makes use of the company’s ShatterShield protection. As such, Verizon customers now have the ability to make use of a device which is not only protected against scratches and cracks, but a screen which they believe is extremely hard to scratch or crack, even if you were intentionally trying to.
Well, CNN decided to put the claims to the test and were out in the streets of New York today to see how shatter-resistant the DROID Turbo 2 screen really is. To cut a long story short, it seems the claims from Motorola and Verizon are ones which do have some grounding, as the CNN folk were unable to really damage the screen in any meaningful manner. This includes purposely dropping the smartphone on the floor face down, running over the display with a bicycle and even stepping on it with a horse. Which, in all reality (and as the CNN team point out) is a little above and beyond ‘normal daily usage’. Of course, the screen is not indestructible and CNN’s attempts does manage to dent the screen (as well as scuffing the phone in general) but after its treatment, the display does seem to remain in a shatter and crack-free state. For those interested, you can check out the treatment and how the DROID Turbo 2 held up in the video below. For those thinking about picking up the DROID Turbo 2, Verizon has confirmed it will be on store shelves this Thursday, although Verizon customers can try and bag themselves a free Turbo 2 by taking part in a Droid Seeker contest which kicks off tomorrow.
