Qualcomm processors are integrated into some the most popular mobile devices while some MediaTek processors have been integrated into some Chinese products and even in some affordable offerings from companies like Sony, both of these companies are dedicated to building processors. Still, manufacturers of mobile products are spending some time developing their own processors. Samsung was very successful with the Exynos 7420 that powers this year’s flagship phones. Huawei owns HiSilicon, which has developed processors used in some of their flagship products as well. LG already had an attempt at building their own processor, it was called Nuclun and it powered up the LG G3 Screen, a phone with a very large screen destined for the Korean market.
The performance of this processor wasn’t what everyone expected and it faced several issues including overheating, so the sales of this device were rather poor. According to recent reports, LG has been developing another processor known as Nuclun 2, and some leaked benchmark scores make it seem very powerful, even beating the scores of the Exynos 7420. It was reported that LG could start producing Nuclun 2 during first half of 2016, but a new rumor suggests that the development of the processor might take a little longer than expected. The reason seems to be that the company wants to integrate an LTE-A modem in their processor, according to Korean media sources.
They might integrate Intel’s XMM 7360 LTE-A Cat 10 modem that was introduced during this year’s MWC. This modem is capable of reaching download speeds up to 450 Mbps and it has support for Dual-SIM cards, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and 3x carrier aggregation of 20 MHz bands. This suggests that the company might consider building it using the 14 nm process with support from Intel, while previous reports mentioned that it would be built by TSMC under a 16 nm process. Some of the leaked specs for the Nuclun 2 include four Cortex-A72 cores, each clocked at 2.1 GHz and four more Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz. Still, since this is all rumored information, things might change over time, but it seems that LG is very interested in bringing new technologies to make up for their last offering.
