While there are companies like Qualcomm or MediaTek that specialize in building processors that power up our mobile devices, there are also some others like Samsung that started building their own Exynos processor lineup to be used in their products and the company has seen successful results in terms of performance. Every company is trying to make these processors more power efficient in a smaller size, but the reasons for the mobile makers to build their own processors include gaining more independence and showing the rest of the companies their offerings seeking an opportunity to sell them.
LG is another company that started building their own NUCLUN lineup of processors and their first one was unveiled last year. That processor was included in the LG G3 Screen, a version of last year’s flagship with a larger display. Despite the processor being an octa-core one, the technology to build it was not the most current one, so the result of its performance was rather underwhelming. Still, it is reported that the company could be preparing a new one to compete with Samsung’s Exynos 7420, which powers this year’s flagship models of that company and currently has some of the highest scores in benchmark tests.
The so-called NUCLUN 2 processor was spotted in the Geekbench test, compared to the Samsung processor so we have an idea of its performance. It will be developed on TSMC 16 nm architecture and its 8 cores will use the big.LITTLE configuration. Four Cortex-A72 cores will be clocked at 2.1 GHz and the other four Cortex-A53 will run at 1.5 GHz. The speeds are comparable to the ones in the Exynos 7420, but this processor is made under a 14 nm process and yet, the NUCLUN 2 performed better in both single-core and multi-core tests, though the scores are not that different. Let’s keep in mind that these results are not official, so they might change by the time LG releases its new processor. We’ll keep looking for some more leaks to add credibility to this rumor. Meanwhile, Qualcomm might want to speed things up with its Snapdragon 820 processor to recover their reputation.
