A short while ago, a list emerged from Motorola which highlighted a number of devices which looked set to receive the update to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). This was not an extensive list, but one which did include all the usual suspects that you would expect to see on an update list. Namely, the latest and greatest. It is commonly understood that all flagship devices will receive updates for the first two years of their lifespan. It is pretty much a rule nowadays.
Well, no. Actually, that does not always seem to be the case. The list did include the Moto X (2nd Gen) and by now, most will be familiar with this device. It is the Motorola flagship that was released about a year ago and preceded the recently released Moto X Pure (if you are the U.S.). If you are elsewhere, then it preceded the Moto X Style. Either way, it was the current flagship until very recently. Now although, it does appear on the list, it was specifically the Pure edition that was listed for the U.S. In spite of the similarity in name to this year’s model, last year’s Pure edition was simple a carrier-free version of the phone. There was also all the various carrier versions which were not Pure editions and instead, simply Moto X (2nd Gen) devices.
Although, this might seem like a small difference when it comes to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), it is starting to look like it will make all the difference for the update. While the list does specify that the Moto X (2014) is included, it does only list the Moto X for Latin America, Europe and Asia. The absence of carrier versions of the Moto X 2014 In the U.S. had led some to wonder whether they will be getting the update. In answering these questions in the Motorola Forums, a Forums Manager very clearly states that the AT&T and Verizon models of the Moto X (2nd Gen) will not be receiving the update. It is unclear if this is certain to be the case and the original list did specify that it was subject to change. However, if it is, it will leave a lot of owners unhappy who only purchased their device within the last year.
