Official: Asus Will Manufacture Smartphones In India

Asus is one of Asia’s biggest tech companies. This Taiwan-based company manufactures all sorts of tech devices, including Android-powered smartphone, smartwatches, tablets, etc. Asus is selling their devices all over the world, but is always looking to expand its presence in certain areas. Speaking of which, India is currently the second biggest smartphone market in the world, and it seems like Asus is ready to join a number of other OEMs which have decided to manufacture their products in that Asian country, read on.

A while back, the Prime Minister of India decided to introduce ‘Make In India’ project. In case you’re unfamiliar with the project, let me explain real quick. India is offering companies various incentives to manufacture their devices in India, and it seems like Asus is going to follow the lead of Xiaomi, Motorola, Lenovo and a number of other companies and do just that. The company has announced that they partnered up with Foxconn, and that they’ll start manufacturing their devices in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, in India.

Asus has announced that they’ll start manufacturing the ZenFone 2 Laser first, and ZenFone Go soon after that. The company’s goal is to manufacture 150,000 smartphones every month, which should account for almost 80% of the company’s smartphone sales in India. “India offers us a huge opportunity as smartphone penetration is just 10%. We are excited to announce our local manufacturing facility that will cater to the growing demands of the market. The Indian government’s focus on ‘Make in India’ has opened a plethora of opportunities for international companies. It is an opportune time to make the announcement as it will enable us to bring our cutting-edge products to consumers who are looking for features and design sensibilities of a high-end smartphone at an economic price,” said Peter Chang, Regional Head of ASUS India.

Mr. Chang has also added that Asus plans to be quite aggressive as far as Indian smartphone market goes, that they plan to achieve 5% market share in the country by next year. As a side note, the company has unveiled their Zenfone Selfie, Zenfone 2 Laser and Zenfone 2 Deluxe smartphone in the country last month.
