OnePlus has rolled out a new accidental insurance plan for buyers of its latest flagship smartphone – the OnePlus 2. The plan is currently being offered exclusively to the company’s customers in India, and comes from a third party service provider called B2X. While the basic tier of the new extended warranty plan costs Rs. 999 ($15) for the ‘B2X Service’ plan, the more premium ‘B2X Protect’ tier will come for Rs. 1,299 ($20). Now, while most extended warranty plans do not protect users against accidental damage like breakage or liquid damage, this new plan seemingly includes insurance against damage that may arise out of such eventualities as well.
Coming to some of the nitty gritties of the new insurance plans for the OnePlus 2, there are two tiers available as mentioned already, neither of which are applicable to the company’s first generation flagship, the OnePlus One. While the lower priced B2X Service just simply extends the basic manufacturer warranty for an extra year without changing the terms of the original warranty per se, the slightly pricier B2X Protect includes damage caused by accidental spillage of liquid, lightning, fire, explosions, riots and “malicious damage”. There’s no direct mention however, to the most common way to damage a touchscreen smartphone – breaking the screen from accidentally dropping it on a hard surface. Unless of course, the breakage is ‘malicious’, which can only be proven by a lengthy and extensive investigation by the police.
For current and future OnePlus 2 users in India who might be interested in buying either of the two extended insurance plans, both are currently available for purchase exclusively on Amazon India. The listing on the Amazon India product page also says that users will have to buy this service plan within 30 days from the purchase of the device itself. Once that part is done and dusted, the extended warranty will have to be activated within seven days of buying it, by registering on the B2X website. Of course, this is not the first time a manufacturer is rolling out an insurance plan for its devices against accidental damage. Earlier this year, HTC had rolled out its ‘Uh Oh Protection‘ plan for its current flagship device – the One M9.
