Samsung and Apple have been number 1 and 2 smartphone OEMs for quite some time now. These two companies have sold millions of devices this year, and in case you’re wondering how do they stack up one next to the other, you’re in the right place. Strategy Analytics shared a report shedding some light on the market share positioning of these two companies, as well as other companies which hold a pretty sizeable market share in today’s smartphone market. Anyhow, let’s take a look, shall we.

According to Strategy Analytics report for the third quarter of this year, Samsung is currently holding 23.7% of the global smartphone market. The company has managed to sell 83.8 million handsets since the beginning of July (ending at the end of September), which is almost twice as much as Apple. The Cupertino Giant was able to sell 48 million iPhone handsets in the same period, and currently holds 13.6% of the global market share.

So, did Samsung perform better than in Q2? Yes, they sure did. The company has managed to sell 6% more devices than in Q2 this year, while Apple managed to hit a 36% year-on-year increase (compared to the same period last year). We knew that Apple’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus device are selling well, and this report proves that. Samsung had plenty of devices at their disposal to make them increase their sales, from the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus, all the way to a number of their mid-range offerings which were announced this year.

Now, as far as other manufacturers are concerned, things are also interesting. Huawei is still the third-placed company, and has managed to sell 26.7 million smartphones in the third quarter of this year, while it holds 7.5% of the global market share. Lenovo follows Huawei, the company has sold 18.8 million devices, while Xiaomi is right below Lenovo with 17.8 million sold handsets. The smartphone market grew by 9.5% compared to last year, and now accounts for 354.2 million smartphones, in case you were wondering. It will be interesting to see how will these OEMs stack up at the end of the year, after the holidays.
