Sony has announced three new devices as part of their flagship Xperia Z5 line during IFA in Berlin last month. The company has showcased Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium devices. The latter one is the most interesting out of the bunch, this is the first handset to sport a 4K display, which sounded quite far-fetched before Sony actually unveiled this phone. Anyhow, it was already confirmed that the phone is not utilizing its full resolution at all times, but fires it up only when necessary, and Sony has decided to further elaborate on that, read on.
A while back, the company has said that the phone displays select content in 4K resolution, while it downgrades regular usage to 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution. The company has said the following in order to further elaborate on their previous statement: ”There’re a few reasons – first up, after extensive user research and testing we found that rendering entertainment content in 4K, but still being able to access and use all the other great Sony smartphone features as normal without compromising on battery life, was an absolute priority for users,” while they also added the following: ”Secondly, many third-party apps are not designed or capable of running at 4K resolution (yet), but as Xperia Z5 Premium’s display hardware has a 3840—2160 resolution (4K SID standard) with 806ppi, we feel we’ve created a future-proof device for the imaginations, developers and apps of the future.”
This actually seems like a smart move by Sony, considering that a full 4K resolution would kill the battery life on the device. Screenshots, for example, are rendered in 1080p resolution, which is a good thing, Android Lollipop still doesn’t support 4K screenshots anyhow. On top of all this, the company has also mentioned that they had a great reason to offer 200GB microSD expansion on the device. A compressed 60-second 4K video on Xperia Z5 Premium takes up 350MB of internal storage, emphasis on ‘compressed’, so this option will surely come in handy for those of you who enjoy shooting video on your phones. Aside from a 5.5-inch 4K display, this smartphone also sports 3GB of RAM and 32GB of native storage. The 23-megapixel camera is available on its front side, and according to DxOMark, it’s great. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core SoC, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop comes pre-installed here with Sony’s custom UI available on top of Google’s OS.
